For every outing a Scout should be equipped with the Scout 10 essentials.
These are:
- Pocket Knife
- First Aid Kit
- Extra Clothing
- Rain Gear
- Water Bottle
- Flashlight or Headlamp
- Trail Food
- Matches and Firestarters
- Sun Protection
- Map and Compass
Additionally, a Scout should have their Scout handbook, and a pack to carry all of it in.
For camping trips you can consult the Scouts Life Magazine Gear Checklists for various camping activities and conditions.

Note that for most camping trips, the only cook gear a Scout will need to bring is their personal mess kit (plate, bowl, cup, and eating utensils). Unless otherwise indicated, Scouts will use troop cooking gear in their Patrol Boxes, for all cooking and kitchen cleanup.
